How to get cited in AI Overviews comes down to four things: a direct answer near the top of the page, facts an AI can lift without rewriting, a named entity that matches your real business details, and something on the page that exists nowhere else. Layout, domain age and word count matter far less than most agencies claim.
Our own numbers show why this matters more than ranking. Singh Media Group sits at average position 3.9 for the query “digital marketing” across 161 impressions, and position 2.8 for “digital marketing agency” across 61 impressions. That is 222 impressions and zero clicks, measured in Search Console on 25 September 2026. We rank well enough to be seen and still do not get chosen, because the answer is being read above us.
If that sounds like a problem for a website, it is not. Rankings still matter. What changed is that a good ranking no longer guarantees a click, and the businesses that get cited inside the AI answer collect the attention that used to belong to the top blue link.
What actually earns a citation
The four levers, in the order I would fix them.
Put the answer in the opening 150 to 200 words. Around 55% of AI Overview citations come from the top 30% of a page, so a page that spends its first 600 words on setup is invisible to the extractor.
Liftable facts come next. A cost table, a comparison, a definition with numbers in it. AI systems lift clean blocks, and a paragraph of adjectives gives them nothing to lift.
Entity clarity is the part owners skip. Your business name, address, phone and category have to agree across your website, Google Business Profile, Justdial, Sulekha and your social profiles. A Noida business that carries three phone numbers across four listings is harder to cite, because the machine cannot tell which one is real.
Original data is the last lever, and the strongest. A dated client result, a first-hand observation, a number that only you have. It is the hardest thing for a competitor to copy, and most Delhi NCR pages skip it.
How I would score a page today
| Lever | What a citable page looks like | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Answer placement | direct answer in the first 200 words, one clear sentence | high |
| Fact density | at least one table, list or ₹ figure block per 400 words | high |
| Entity consistency | identical NAP across site, GBP and two main directories | high |
| Author identity | named writer, visible bio, Person markup | medium |
| Structure | question-led headings that mirror how people ask | medium |
| Original data | dated example or measured number | high |
| Freshness | updated in the last 6 months with the date shown | medium |
Nothing on that list needs a plugin or an “AI SEO” subscription. Which brings me to the myths.
The llms.txt and “AI markup” myths
You will be told to add an llms.txt file, an ai.txt file, or a special AI schema so chatbots can find you. Google’s own documentation on AI features in Search says those surfaces draw on the same crawling and indexing as regular results, and no AI system has committed to reading a file that does not exist in any standard. Adding one costs nothing, but it is not a strategy.
The second myth is that ChatGPT cites pages the way Google ranks them. It does not. ChatGPT’s browsing pulls from its own index and from search partners, and its answers lean on pages that read like a person wrote them. Blocking GPTBot to “protect content” removes you from that surface entirely. If you want to be cited there, stay crawlable.
The Delhi NCR playbook, step by step
Seven steps, in the order that produced movement for our own site.
- Claim and complete your Google Business Profile: categories, services, hours, photos, and a real description. This is the entity backbone for local AI answers and it costs an hour.
- Fix NAP everywhere. One phone number, one address format, one business name across your site, GBP, Justdial, Sulekha, Bing Places and Apple Maps. Duplicates split your signals.
- Build locality pages for each area you genuinely serve, Karol Bagh, Rajouri Garden, Noida Sector 62, Gurgaon Sector 56, with detail that is actually about that area rather than a swapped city name.
- Answer the money questions on your own site. What your service costs in Delhi NCR, what is included, how you compare to the alternative. Most Delhi NCR businesses leave pricing to aggregators, so aggregators get cited instead.
- Add a real FAQ with markup. Five questions your sales calls keep hitting, answered in two or three sentences each, with FAQPage schema.
- Put a name and a face on the content. Author byline, short bio, Person schema. Buyers weigh who is speaking, and so do AI systems.
- Measure monthly, and only what you can see. Track which pages get cited in AI Overviews for your target queries, and watch Search Console impressions on positions 1 to 5 where clicks stay at zero. Zero clicks on a top position is the clearest signal that an AI answer is absorbing your traffic.
Steps 3, 5 and 6 are where most local agencies stop because they need writing and structure rather than a dashboard. That is also why they work.
Reading your own numbers
Search Console will not tell you which AI Overview cited you, and the mechanics of how to get cited in AI Overviews never show up as a column there. What it does show is the pattern: impressions climb while clicks stay flat on informational queries, and buy-intent queries keep converting normally. That split is the fingerprint of an AI answer that sits above you.
For a Delhi NCR clinic or retailer, I would track three numbers monthly. Average position on your top 20 queries, clicks on those queries, and whether your brand name appears in an AI Overview for “best <category> in <locality>”. The first two come free from Search Console, and Google’s How Search works pages explain what those numbers mean. The third takes 20 minutes with a fresh browser profile, and it is the only honest measure of whether any of this worked.
Questions owners ask
How long does it take to get cited in AI Overviews?
Expect 6 to 12 weeks for pages you rewrite, faster if the page already ranks in the top 5 and you only need to restructure the top of it. Entity fixes across directories can move in 3 to 4 weeks for smaller categories.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
No. Google’s AI features use standard crawling and indexing. An llms.txt file is harmless and unproven, and no major AI system has committed to reading it.
Should I block AI crawlers?
If you want citations, no. Blocking GPTBot or Google-Extended removes you from the surface you are trying to appear on. If you sell content itself and licensing matters, that is a different decision.
Does AI search visibility replace SEO?
No. The same pages that rank feed the AI answers, and learning how to get cited in AI Overviews is mostly a question of restructuring pages you already have: answer first, facts in clean blocks, consistent entity details, a named author.
Can a small Delhi NCR business do this without an agency?
Steps 1, 2 and 5 are a weekend of work and cost nothing. Steps 3, 4 and 6 need writing, and that is where most owners stall for months.
Where this fits your other spend
AI visibility sits on top of search work, not instead of it. If you are weighing budgets, compare what local SEO costs in Delhi NCR and what a full digital marketing retainer costs before deciding. Paid channels have their own economics, covered in our Meta Ads retainer breakdown.
We scope GEO and AEO work as part of search engagements, alongside everything else listed on the Singh Media Group services page. The rest of our Delhi NCR cost and visibility breakdowns sit on the blog.
